Engagement ring on your hand, venue secured, the big day’s date fixed? Then it’s time for you to get excited about the thought: how to find the wedding DJ who is guaranteed to rock the party and even entice Grandma onto the dance floor? Don’t let choosing the band or DJ become a nightmare! We’ve gathered the 9+1 most important tips to ensure your wedding celebration is truly unforgettable! 🎶👰♀️🕺
You probably don’t ask for DJ offers every day, do you? Most likely, your closest experience with finding music service providers is when organizing a corporate Christmas party or a surprise birthday party. But let’s face it, the dress rehearsal is your wedding, and you can’t make any mistakes here! Music is the soul, and the DJ is the heartbeat that brings the party to life. A good DJ doesn’t just play music, but creates an atmosphere that keeps your guests on the dance floor until dawn! 😉
Of course, asking for a quote is not a big deal, but believe me, there’s a bunch of little things you must keep in mind to not just find a DJ, but THE DJ who will be the star of your wedding. And this is true even if you saw a super cool person at your friends’ wedding, or someone warmly recommended someone! So, sit back, get your notepad (or your phone) ready, and let’s dive into the mysteries of choosing a DJ! 🎧
1. Once you have a venue and time, look for a DJ! 📅
Many people tend to leave booking a music provider until the last minute, but this is a huge mistake, even a crucial point, we could say! 😱 Sought-after DJs are booked more than a year in advance (sometimes even earlier), especially for summer Saturdays, which are already quite sparse around the previous November-December period. Imagine having the perfect wedding dress and a fabulous venue, but no one to spin ’90s pop hits or 2000s dance anthems because you ran out of time! Don’t be without a DJ on the most important night!
2. Choose your DJ carefully! 🕵️♀️
In today’s fast-paced digital world, we almost always look for service providers online, don’t we? Whether it’s a great website, a dynamic Facebook, or perhaps an Instagram profile, 90% of couples make their decision based on these. The DJ’s website, his references (videos, photos that convey the party atmosphere), and of course, the reviews reveal a lot about his work. See how dynamic the footage is, how professional the photography is! Rely on these impressions, and if based on what you see, you say: “Wow, he’s the one!”, then the inquiry email can go out! 😉
3. Request quotes from as many sympathetic service providers as possible! 🔥
A DJ is like any other “chef” on the wedding menu: each offers similar, yet in many ways different services. At different prices, with different quality. You might end up with several DJs you like, but it’s better to have a slightly difficult choice later than to settle for a colleague who, with good intentions, can only be called a “compromise solution.” Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, feel free to look around to truly get the best!
4. Write down the details, exact requirements! 🤫
It is a constant phenomenon that many people only try to filter by price, so only emails like “How much does a Budapest wedding cost?” or similar arrive in tons. The other misguided idea is that the couple does not write down the location, so that the DJ’s offer is not expensive because of it. However, the DJ can calculate accurate technical requirements based on the number of guests and the characteristics of the venue, and give a realistic price! In the absence of these, communication slows down, or the end result will be a false calculation if it turns out during the process that a completely different technical installation is needed. Don’t be mysterious, the details are your friends! 🗺️
5. Ask for detailed technical data! ✨🔦
I have also encountered several colleagues’ offers over the years, and I confess, many just write: “We’ll really get the party going!”, but they don’t specify exact sound and lighting technical parameters. Don’t settle for “there will be lights and smoke too,” but ask for the complete equipment list they will use for the wedding! A professional DJ must also be an expert in technical matters. If they cannot inform you about this: either they don’t really know about it, or they are not working with equipment they are happy to advertise. Probably, the excessive technical details won’t tell you much either, but it will say a lot about their work. This will already be a huge filter between DJs, because you will see exactly how meticulous each one is about their own equipment – and thus the atmosphere of the party! 🔊
Pro tip: Coordinate with the photographer and videographer beforehand! We’ll tell you when and where the show will be, so they can prepare for stunning shots. Slow-motion clips with fireworks are particularly impactful! 🎬
6. Timed or unlimited package? 🕰️💃
It is important how long the prices in the offer are valid for! In many cases, this can be an 8-9 hour period (these packages typically last till 3 AM at most, and are surcharged hourly after the time limit is reached). Think about it: “Despacito” or “Shape of You” is playing, the guests are raving, and then comes “Sorry, your time is up!”. In the case of a long wedding, the hourly surcharge can easily get out of hand. In many cases, you get unlimited availability in the offers. These may typically be more expensive, but their huge advantage is that there can be no hidden costs in the early morning, and for a real all-night party, they will also be much more favorable in terms of price/value ratio. Don’t let the clock dictate the pace of the party! 🥳
7. Don’t let price be the deciding factor! 💰
I know, I know, a wedding is an expensive affair, and every penny counts. But believe me, price isn’t everything! It’s a common experience that in many cases there will be a 10-20-30 thousand forint difference between offers. In many cases, a cheaper offer can mean a much lower technical and quality standard Proportionally, so it’s important to properly inform yourselves according to the previous points about exactly what you’re getting for that price. A bad DJ can ruin the whole party, and then it’s useless if you saved 20 thousand forints if the guests will sit around looking bored! Price isn’t everything, the atmosphere is king! 👑

8. Ask about the ancillary costs! 👻
This may not be the decisive factor, but all potential ancillary costs should not be neglected. Think about it, if a DJ has to travel from the end of the world, a travel cost arises, which depending on the offer can be between HUF 60-120/km. If the DJ has to travel 200 km, that can already be a significant sum, which will increase the final amount. For longer distances, providing accommodation is also an issue, which in this case is also the cost of the young couple. In many cases, these “hidden costs” have inflated the final price so much that the couple, in the last rounds of negotiation, rather looked for a “local” DJ in the area. If you are aware of these from the beginning, you can save yourselves a lot of unnecessary consultations and correspondence. Another ancillary cost may arise if the DJ brings a technician with them. The technician’s salary will already be included in the DJ’s price, but you will have to take care of their provisions and accommodation. So, ask about everything that could be an extra cost!
9. Don’t sit long on the offers! 👰♀️⏱️
In many cases, service providers state a validity period on their offer. This is not to rush you, but because they temporarily prioritize the given couple. As soon as another inquiry comes in for that date, the providers will re-offer their services. Unfortunately, in many cases, some couples try to “float” and mislead providers for weeks. Of course, one or two meetings are acceptable, but experience shows that those who do not make a decision within 1-2 weeks are very likely not to be kept in evidence. A popular DJ can receive 5-10 inquiries for summer Saturdays, and since nearly 80% of inquiries are not even responded to by couples, it is understandable if the same day is offered to 2-3 couples at roughly the same time. Don’t be a hesitant bride, because good DJs are snapped up quickly! Falling between two stools is the worst, and the atmosphere of the wedding party does not deserve compromise! 💃
9+1. Request a personal meeting from the most promising candidates! 🤝
This doesn’t mean you should cast 5-10 disco actors for 3 weeks! If you do, don’t be surprised if half of the providers are already booked by others by the end of the casting. If you want to play it safe, then for your own peace of mind and the perfect atmosphere, meet the two most promising ones, and then decide who you have the most “chemistry” with! The more colleagues you ask for a personal meeting with, the more time and energy you’ll spend on it, and the harder it will be to make a decision at the end. And if neither of the two completely satisfies you… then keep looking! The main thing is to feel the flow!
We hope these tips help you find the wedding DJ of your dreams, who will make sure your big day is truly unforgettable! Remember, music is the soul of the party, and with a professional DJ, dancing until dawn is guaranteed! 😉
